Learning objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Analyse the cases assigned, and individual elements of those cases, from multiple perspectives, and explain the assumptions behind these multiple perspectives
  • Use the case materials assigned in the course to provide concrete examples of effective (and ineffective) approaches to leadership in a variety of organizational, international, and regional contexts.
  • Use the case materials assigned in the course to support multiple definitions of the concept of leadership, and to present practical examples of the multiple ways, in which the notion of leadership, as well as particular leadership styles and approaches, compare across organisational, industrial, regional, and cultural contexts
  • Present effective summary introductions and analyses of the cases assigned in the course, and explain the components of effective case presentations, as well as the importance thereof.
Course prerequisites
Bachelor degree. The course is offered as an elective in concentration in Diversity and Change Management in the Masters Program in Business, Languages and Culture (BLC), but is also open to students in other graduate programs at the CBS, including international students.

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

individual oral examination on all material covered in the course - based on a three-page written synopsis to be handed in one week before the exam. The subject of the synopsis is chosen by the student. It is not graded, but it serves as a starting point for the examination.

Course content and structure

This course will help students develop their basic leadership and management skills through the in-depth discussion and analysis of an array of case studies chosen to exemplify the complex nature of the strategic, organisational and interpersonal challenges that confront organizations and the people who work in them on a day-to-day basis.

The course will also address the methodological issues raised by the use of case method for learning about the interrelated dynamics of leadership and management, and provide participants with the opportunity to develop effective skills in case discussion, analysis, and presentation.

Themes covered in the course will include: the nature of leadership in different organizational, business, and cultural contexts; the roles of leaders, followers, and team members; good and bad leadership; the relationship between leadership and ethics; cultural influences on the practice of leadership;the practice of leadership development, coaching, and performance evaluation; the organizational significance of ego, ambition, and interpersonal competition; the management of corporate culture; and the manner in which leaders respond to challenge and crisis.

Teaching methods
Class time will consist almost entirely of case-based discussions, with very few formal lectures, and with students actively involved in analysing and presenting cases. Students will be strongly encouraged to form study groups, which meet outside of class to prepare and discuss cases in advance.

Expected literature

Course materials will consist exclusively of business cases published by such institutions as the Harvard Business School, The Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), and the Insead Business School.
