Learning objectives
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
  • Explain concepts, theories, models and frameworks used in the strategic management of supply chains specifically focusing on reverse logistics and sustainability considerations.
  • Analyze different approaches used by companies for managing supply chains in terms of reverse logistics and sustainability.
  • Describe best practice examples that illustrate reverse logistics and sustainability strategies for supply chain management.
Course prerequisites
Basic core master’s level courses specifically in marketing and finance.

Mandatory Mid-term Assignment: An individually prepared assignment to be submitted online involving a SWOT analysis of a case.

If the number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination warrants that it may most appropriately be held as an oral examination, the programme office will inform the students that the make-up examination/re-take examination will be held as an oral examination instead.
Course content and structure
This course will focus on reverse logistics and sustainability considerations. Two-thirds of the course will address considerations related to reverse logistics and the remaining one-third will focus on sustainability topics. The treatment of reverse logistics will address process mapping, ‘make or buy’ decisions and types of reverse logistics and their cost and revenue implications. The treatment of sustainability will include sustainability reporting that will cover such topics as ISO1400 and supply chain management issues. Case studies of best practices will be introduced to provide insights on energy and environmental implications of specific practices related to both reverse logistics and sustainability. In addition to the Mandatory Mid-term Assignment based on a case (described above) there will be a Preliminary Assignment that involves a SWOT analysis of a case.
