Learning objectives
The students should be able to :
  • • Explain and defend a position on why and how arts- and design- based practices matter to the creation of business value.
  • Describe and differentiate between the design and management of visionary-led and collectively-driven creative group processes
  • Discuss key concepts and theoretical perspectives related to team leadership in creative endeavours
  • Make strategic decisions regarding the application of arts and design-based methods to innovation objectives and entrepreneurial ventures.

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

The oral exam is individual. If written individually, the paper must be of max. 25 pages.

If a student is ill during the regular oral exam, he/she will be able to re-use the project at the make-up exam. If a student is ill during the writing of the project and did not contribute to the project, the make-up exam can be written individually or in groups (provided that other students are taking the make-up/re-exam). If the student did not pass the regular exam, he/she must make a new revised project (confer advice from the examiner) and hand it in on a new deadline specified by the secretariat.
Description of the exam procedure
Students can work in groups of up to 5 on the exam research paper. A single author writes up to 25 pages, and for every author joining the document can be 5 pages longer (two authors 30, three authors 35, four authors 40, and five authors 45).
 
Supervision for the capstone exam will come from within the two courses. Creating the simulation for the leadership course, and engaging in discussions in the art of innovation course provide ample opportunities for Q&A around how to research, analyze, structure and write the paper. This arrangement will be reviewed after one year to assess if further supervision is necessary.
Course content and structure
The capstone exam concludes the first year of the OIE. It is a combined exam for the classroom course Art of Innovation, and the studio course Leading Ventures. This makes it a 15 ETCS exam, consisting of a research paper (individual or in groups) and an individual oral exam. The re-exam has the same format
 
The paper is based in the research that the students carry out for the leadership course, and it is further enriched through the theories from the art of innovation course. The task will be to study, analyze, and prepare a recommendation for an entrepreneurial venture or innovation effort in an established organization. Students pick a research site of their inclination, prepare the theory, choose the methods of data collection, present their findings, discuss the theory, and provide a concluding recommendation to the venture or organization.
 
The capstone exam tests students’ ability to join theory and practice in the investigation of an issue of relevance for the OIE program. It present students also with an opportunity to develop and test their ability of working on a larger research paper. The capstone exam presents thus a intermediary step towards the master thesis.
 
One instance of activity based grading in the leadership studio course (pass/fail), including opportunity for retake (same format), grants access to the capstone exam. It is also the research on a new venture or innovation team for the simulation in that course that forms the backbone of their capstone exam research paper. Students use the theory behind the two courses (Art of Innovation, and Leading Ventures) to analyze and discuss their findings. Therefore the two courses share the same learning objectives detailed below.
