Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors: At the written exam the student should demonstrate that s/he:
  • Can provide an accurate English translation of a written Japanese text with regards to syntax, genre, audience and function (providing explanatory footnotes when deviating considerably from the original syntax).
  • Can make a grammatical sentence analysis at the syntactical level (either through the tree diagram or through description) using the appropriate grammatical terms.
  • Can write with a minimal competence on the rhetorical- and syntactical level.

If the number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination warrants that it may most appropriately be held as an oral examination, the programme office will inform the students that the make-up examination/re-take examination will be held as an oral examination instead.
Description of the exam procedure

The exam is based on an unknown text. Dictionaries (in the form of books and Casio or Canon Wordtanks - or similar with no Internet connection) as well as grammar handbooks are allowed. 

The exam consists of the following disciplines: 


1. Translation into English 
2. Grammatical analysis of a sentence from the exam text 
3. Essay in Japanese of max. 800 characters 

 

Grading is based on a holistic assessment of all three disciplines.
Course content and structure

The focus of teaching is applied language use in order to enable the student to communicate in lower intermediate Japanese about general topics related to culture and society. We continue to work with translation as a tool to ensure reading comprehension, and continue to expand the range of vocabulary and kanji. 

The course consists of three interrelated classes: 1) translation, 2) speaking and writing, 3) grammar. 

Japanese 2 is a intermediate language course that builds upon the knowledge acquired from Japanese 1, while gradually increasing the level of difficulty.
Teaching methods
Teaching methods consist of pair/group work monitored by the instructor, and individual writing and listening exercises. Learning is based upon cooperative learning principles to facilitate equal participation and simultaneous interaction and to ensure each student’s maximum output during class time. Our methods of instruction also involve e-tivities (online activities) to support the cultivation of translation skills.

Teaching is based on textbooks as well as audio input corresponding to an intermediate level.

The languages of instruction are Japanese to continuously stimulate and develop spoken fluency and listening comprehension, and English to talk about grammar and to translate texts.
