Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors:
  • To succeed at this elective, the student must be able to prepare various types of texts, messages and/or slide presentations that show an above-average understanding of and capability to incorporate and overcome various English linguistic challenges in their texts.
  • The student must be able to account for various choices in relation to an assignment within a particular text genre.
  • The student must be able to complete a questionnaire based on multiple-choice with a 100% correct score.
Prerequisites for registering for the exam
Number of mandatory activities: 5
Compulsory assignments (assessed approved/not approved)
At least 4 out of 5 submitted assignments must receive a pass to qualify for entrance to the exam.

Make-up exam/re-exam
Same examination form as the ordinary exam
If the number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination warrants that it may most appropriately be held as an oral examination, the programme office will inform the students that the make-up examination/re-take examination will be held as an oral examination instead.
Description of the exam procedure

The student is welcome to include various dictionaries and thesauri in the student's personal memory stick for upload prior to the exam.
Course content and structure

Most financial institutions today require their employees to prepare own written material In English, i.e. presentation slides, articles, reports, executive summaries etc. A vast majority of this written material is prepared in English to accommodate a range of international stakeholders.

 

However, many non-native English-speaking graduates and post-graduates of economic studies encounter various challenges related to their English language skills once their university studies are complete. These challenges often manifest themselves once a graduate a required to prepare different text genres.

 

The purpose of this elective is to boost the individual student's confidence and subsequent credibility in relation to the preparation of financial texts in English for a demanding international audience.

 

The student is made aware of pittfalls when writing in an economic context and trained how to avoid and correct various linguistic aspects when writing English texts.

 

This is achieved through industry-related assignment and exercises. Teaching will take the form of lectures, discussions and feedback. Teaching is in English.
Teaching methods
Various business texts, messages, presentation slides and articles form the theoretical and terminological basis of the course and act as preparation for the home-assignments.

The home-assignments are submitted during the semester and are returned with comments, followed by an in-depth discussion between students and lecturer during class.

Weekly exercises which are prepared at home and subsequently discussed in class. Some pop-up exercises will be prepared and discussed in class.

The students are expected to submit no less than four out of five assignments during the course of the semester in order to qualify for the final exam.

Expected literature

The applicable literature consists of a compendium with a compilation of texts, exercises and assignments as well as recommended lexical aids.
