Course content and structure

This course is dedicated to the multidisciplinary aspects of management and leadership. Contemporary approaches to the study of management and leadership  will be seen in the light of recent advances brain science. The combination of economics, management and neuroscience – also called neuromanagement and neuroleadership – will be used comprehensively throughout the course. Specifically, the role of emotional and cognitive aspects in managerial decisions are in focus.

The course provides an opportunity for students to (a) deepen their understanding of how the brain makes social and non-social choices, (b) learn about the role of individual emotional and cognitive capacities and challenges, and how to employ this knowledge to management and organizational challenges, and (c) learn to employ neuromanagement and neuroleadership strategies to .

Much of the course will be dedicated to the workings of the mind in light of recent advances in neuroscience, and how this relates to our understanding of managerial and leadership decision making. Issues such as attention, emotional responses, memory, preference formation and decision making are covered in depth. Emphasis will also be on case-driven managerial challenges and how this new science is changing the way leaders should be driven by science-based leadership

Teaching methods
The course is given in lecture form with cases and classwork, by Dr. Thomas Z. Ramsøy and colleagues.

Selected cases will be treated, in order to enable the student to relate the theoretical material to management & leadership relevant organisational challenges. Cases will be presented and discussed, and the success of case discussion depends on the active participation of each student and student group, both between instructor and students, but also between students.
