The integrated leadership course is designed to raise the participants’ awareness of the intricate workings of leadership in today’s society and economy, and to help the student develop skills, insights, and competencies necessary for their future career. The student will reflect upon personal leadership style and role, the dynamics of team leadership, authority, conflict, and complexity, and will be able to draw for each from the three sources of leadership. Integrated Leadership is a distinct and individual course, however it is an integrated part of the modules.
Leadership should always be seen as an integrated practice in professional settings, i.e. the industry, the firm and the specific challenges that confront reflexive-practitioners. The leadership module is grounded on these assumptions and the module is organized as four courses linked to four of the modules in the Programme.
In module 1 “Shipping as a business and as a market” integrated leadership begins when the participants have finished the first module, because we then have the opportunity to put light on the leadership dimension in the beginning of the Programme. This will make the student aware of their own responsibility and challenges as leaders in the context of the industry and their organizations.
In module 3 “International economics and market analysis” there will be a need of having a constant focus on leadership to make it explicit that they should both be strong analytical managers with an industry perspective and they should recognize the leadership challenges and responsibilities that they have.
In module 5 “Operational management and information technology”, the primarily focus will be on how the participants should have a balanced focus on leadership and management. Management understood primarily as a rational and analytical function and leadership as a relational and facilitating function.
In module 8 “Managing strategy and change” strategic management is seldom an individual practice but something that is taking place in larger groups of managers. The participants will learn about the dynamics of leadership teams and how they should be organized to support an effective and strong strategic focus in the company. The participants should work with own leadership practice in terms of a specific and concrete leadership challenges that they are confronted with in own organization. These challenge will be cornerstones for own practical reflection on own leadership and the use of theories taught in the course. |
