Course content and structure

This course introduces theories of international business strategy and demonstrates them through case studies. Its goal is to develop your ability to apply a holistic view to managerial issues in the international and multinational firms. Since topics related to the business environment have been emphasized throughout the Bachelor’s program, this course focuses on internal and firm-specific themes related to strategy. Some issues, such as competitive strategy, have been treated previously in the course of the Bachelor’s program. This course sheds light on such topics from a strategic point of view, and we will highlight strategy as it relates to multinational corporations (MNCs).

The course has three focal points: 1) the basic theory of the firm and its strategy; 2) organizational principles of the multinational/international firm, and 3) implementation of strategy in the MNC.

Teaching methods
The teaching is a combination of lectures, which present theories and models, class-wide case study discussions, chat group discussions, small group activities. Considerable time will be spent in a two-way dialogue between you and lecturers, rather than one-way communication from the lecturer to you. Therefore, be prepared to answer questions in class and participate in discussions.

Lectures will offer overviews, examples, clarifications and elaborations of selected areas, as well as an opportunity to address student questions. As part of the lectures, you will actively work on small exercises from time to time, as well as present and discuss your findings. Chat group discussions will be used throughout the course.
