Learning objectives |
To achieve the grade 12, students
should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor
mistakes or errors: Upon completing the course, the student should
be able to:
- Define and explain what an information system is, and the
elements that constitute an information system
- Argue for (explain and reflect) why information systems are
essential to business and explain how information systems can be
used in organisations
- Describe the basic technological framework for IS (such as
hardware, software, databases and communication
technologies)

grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and

structure |
Aim of the course
The course ‘Fundamentals of Information Systems constitutes a
foundation course that provides the necessary understanding of the
definitions, concepts, and tools used in the IS field. It
focuses on understanding and defining the notion of Information
Systems, their relationship with business activities, and the
technologies that provide the foundation for information systems.
Course content
The course provides an introduction to information systems by
examining what is an IS, what are the different types, and how
businesses use them. In addition, the module will examine the
basic technologies which provide the technical foundation for
information systems.
The workshops, which run parallel to the lectures, will be used to
reinforce an understanding of areas covered in the lectures.
Exercises, case studies and student presentations will be used for
enhancing students’ understanding of the lecture
material.
