Progression through the two internships
The two internships will train the student in the role of
"reflective interns". This means that on one hand they
will particpate in the busienss related issues and on the other
hand reflects upon the concrete organizational, professional,
theoretic and personal opportunities and conditions for the problem
solving. The internships will provide the students with a strong
professional foundation and network upon which they can build the
further carrier and personal development.
The course of internship consists of two internships preferably in
the same company, which will permit the students to gradually
develop an understanding of the different aspect of the shipping
company. Each internship will have a main focus, which will ensure
a progressivity during all three internships.
Internship I: Holistic Knowledge and specialize
skills
The purpose of the first 4 months of internship is to
introduce the student to the daily life of a relevant maritime
company. The students has just finished courses as "Operations
and Logistics Management", "Risk Management" and
"Trade Finance" and thus the main focus is that the
student learn how all these different aspects are a part of the
bigger picture in the company. The student must gain a holistic
perspective of the company and how the theories learned at CBS
might be applied. It is during this internship that the student
first must experience the limit of theoretical works on practical
issues, within one or two different departments. The students will
after 4 months be capable of applying the relevant theories
from the bachelor program in a practical context. The student must
demonstrate a problem-oriented mindset in order to identify the
challenges in a shipping company.
The second part of the inetrnship will bring the
student deeper into the company and the students will be introduced
to all departments in order to by the end of the internship to
express interest in a specific department. The students will
develop some specialized skills which permit more responsibility
and challenging assignments. The internship will also bring the
student out on open sea at least once in order to gain insight in
what a shipping company physical context consists of. The student
must participate in a more proactive way in the daily life and be
able to argument for selection of theories, emperics, methods,
conclusion and recommendation in assignments. To have a clear
structure for an analysis and understanding of the strength and
weaknesses is a skill the student will acquire during this
internship. The first internship was more about how to apply
theories where the second is more about which and why.
