Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors:
  • Identify and describe a relevant problem in relation to the general objective of the EBUSS programme.
  • Reflect on methodology, including choice of theory/technique, empirical analysis method, to give an account of the balance between data, theory, analysis strategy, validity, reliability, pre-understandings/biases, delimitations, etc
  • Make a disciplined analysis of theory and/or empirical data (qualitative and/or quantitative).
  • Describe a clear connection between problem formulation (research question), analysis, and conclusion.
  • Put the project into perspective and make a process description.
Course prerequisites
Contact and agreement with a EBUSS supervisor, approved project agreement containing research question/problem description as well as methods intended to be used in the project.

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

Appendices can be added, max. 50 pages, + additional material (video recordings, audio etc.) on a memory stick or similar. The report must be readable without the appendices.

Description of the exam procedure

Every project needs to have a project agreement that includes a project description as well as an EBUSS supervisor.

 

The project agreement must state: 

-    an EBUSS topic area/field chosen by the student (B, T, P). Always 2 areas for 16-week projects. 
-    a name and email of a supervisor who has explicitly agreed to supervise the students
-    a specific (empirical or theoretical) area or phenomenon of research
-    a motivation for choosing the area/field, e.g. grounded in literature
-    a research question 
-    an overview of the methods that are deemed appropriate to answer the specific research question

 

If the final project departs from the description in the original project agreement, the reason for this must be accounted for in a short section in the project report. 

The project agreement must always be approved by the acting project coordinator who acts on behalf of the study board.

The amount of work expected for a 16-week project is 414 hrs. per student in the group, which amounts to approximately twelve weeks of full time study per student. Therefore, it is expected that students who wish to make a 16-week project spend around 50-70 of these hours for planning, reading and researching their topic area, methods, and literature before they submit the project agreement, and also study the topic between submission of report and oral exam. 

Contact the supervisor/s personally (and early in the process) and make sure that you have an explicit acceptance before you invite a main supervisor and, if necessary, a co-supervisor.

 

The project must be handed in with the official EBUSS front matter.

The examination is an individual, oral exam based on a written group project. 30 minutes per student in 16-week projects. This includes deliberations between examiner and external examiner as well as feedback and change over. The exam typically begins with a short presentation by the student (3-5 minutes). The student can bring any kind of relevant material to the exam, but cannot read aloud from a manuscript. 
Course content and structure

 

The overall purpose of the project activities in the M.Sc in E-business is to work with a problem chosen by the student him- or herself, which falls under the general objective of the programme and provides the student with basis for progress towards the thesis work.

 

The project activities thus provide an opportunity to prepare for the master thesis. Furthermore, the idea behind the 22,5 ECTS EBUSS projects is to use them in a cumulative way, so that the student may form a business idea in the first project, plan how to carry it out in the second project, and execute the plan in the third project.

It is important that the project activities during the 2nd and/or 3rd semester are used for information retrieval and the identification of the thesis subject.

 

The technology discipline (covered by T-courses) include IT security, enterprise architecture, business intelligence, human computer interaction, and user-oriented interface design and systems including individual or organizational use of IT tools. However, a T-project is not necessarily limited to these subjects.

 

A project that meets the technology requirements may either include elements such as programming, web design or database integration. They can also cover an analysis of strategic safety or specific user conditions, an account of business applications of new technologies, the analysis of computer interface usability, user experience, novel interface design and interaction etc.

 

In any case, it is important that the T-project has business relevance, broadly defined as per the overall EBUSS programme. The report must thus include considerations of the business/organizational aspects of the problem, e.g. whether it would be valuable for a company to invest resources in the development and implementation of a certain technical solution. 

 

A 16-week project always covers two subject areas (e.g. T and B), and must thus treat both of the subject areas comprehensively.
