Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors:
  • describe the concepts of strategic management models;
  • identify methods of achieving sustainable competitive advantage in relevant markets;
  • explain key success factors of an entity by identification of core competencies, competitive advantages and strategies;
  • apply the principles of strategic analysis in both domestic and international settings;
  • assess the suitability of various forms of strategic options, in a global environment context;
  • make and defend decisions in the choice between competing strategic alternatives; and
  • demonstrate awareness of issues relating to the implementation and monitoring of a chosen strategy.
Course prerequisites
Strategic Management is a capstone course for an undergraduate business major program. Participants should be familiar with principles of management and functional business management concepts.

Course content and structure

This course introduces participants to the concepts and issues involved in strategic management as well as the actions required to acquire and maintain competitive advantages in business.  Lessons taught will aid participants in understanding the relationship between strategy and business performance. Attention will focus on appreciating why some organizations outperform others in a global environment.
 
Participants will be brought through and develop an understanding of the strategic management process and cases will be discussed to reinforce the theoretical framework.

 

Preliminary assignment: Based on uploaded materials and any others students can find on the internet, sketch out a Strategic Management Framework as comprehensively as they  can.

Feedback activity: Revision (with questions and answers) feedback from students on classes 1-6 (approx. 30 mins) to check understanding of course content and effectiveness of pedagogy.

Preliminary Assignment: To help students get maximum value from ISUP courses, instructors provide a reading or a small number of readings or video clips to be read or viewed before the start of classes with a related task scheduled for class 1 in order to 'jump-start' the learning process.
