Learning objectives |
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the
following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or
errors: By the end of this course:
- The student should be able to discuss the development of
HRM.
- The student should be able to account for major analytical
concepts in HRM.
- The student should be able to discuss the impact of HRM
policies and practices on employers and employees.
- The student should be able to critically discuss key concepts
in HRM in relation to a given issue.

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product
must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The
grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and

Course content and structure |
The management of people is a key concern for organisations. In
this course the development and meaning of human resource
management (HRM) are explored.
The aims of the course are:
- to provide the student with a critical understanding of theory,
policy and practices in the field of human resource
management;
- to develop an appreciation of the major current themes and
debates in the field of HRM;
- to give the student an understanding of the main concepts and
models that under pin human resource management;
- to present a critical assessment of the relationship between
theory and practice in human resource management in contemporary
workplaces;
- to assess political factors that shape human resource policy
choices;
- to develop an understanding of human resource management
policies and practices in organsiations; and,
- assess the problems associated with the design and
implementation of HRM policies and practices, as well as their
impact on employees.

The course will consist of lectures, case
discussions and workshops. Active preparation and participation are
expected from the students. |
