  • Define enterprise applications and explain how current information technology affects the business environment, business models and the value chain.
  • Be familiar with the processes involved in planning, developing, and implementing information systems like ERP, CRM, SCM and e-procurement.

Description of the exam procedure

The purpose of the assignment is to analyse how IT systems support, enable, transform or revolutionise the supply chain (SC) or fail to do so based on the theories that the students learn in this course. As a result they are required to analyse a SC from an Information Management perspective. They can choose to write about:

a) a successful SC where the students analyse how the IT systems contribute to the SC being successful. Future consideration in maintaining success in terms of SC.

 

b) a SC that has room for improvement where the students analyse the current processes and IT systems, the problems that they are facing and how are the IT systems disabling or hindering the SC to reach its potential. Propose how can they improve their SC based on the knowledge you have acquired in the course

 

c) an IT intervention in a SC which either improved the SC in some aspects at least or failed to meet the requirements and made the SC suffer (e.g. the ERP failure cases we had in class)

 

In all three cases, the students have to show the impact (good, bad or neutral) IT systems have on the supply chain.
Course content and structure

The rise of global commerce and the usage of Information Technology (IT) have among others changed the way companies are doing business. With the rapid spread of the standard IT solutions that cover entire businesses and their supply chains, it is the focal firm's challenge to ensure that these solutions are optimised.

 

The purpose of the course is to offer the students the opportunity to develop their skills to understand the concepts, skills, tools, and opportunities that surround the use of Information Technology (IT) in the supply chain. 

 

The course will show how information management and the IT perspective can be put in relation to the various challenges in supply chains. It discusses how IT can contribute to the optimisation of supply chains and how sustainable competitive advantage can be achieved.

 

The course content applies SCM and logistics theories on enterprise application such as ERP, CRM, IOS, PLM, E-procurement, RFID and GTM systems. The role of net-based solutions in supply chain management and operations management are introduced and discussed.

 

This course also acknowledges the major problems with implementing information systems. It explores the reasons for these problems and management solutions to mitigate these problems. The challenge is to create new innovative potentials where the value of the information inherent in the supply chain is utilised to create real differentiated competitive advantages for the enterprise and its collaborators.
Teaching methods
The individual lessons concern various themes and are as a main rule divided into three stages:
In the first stage, students give a perspective on the theory/articles related to the lesson, possibly based on questions asked in advance.

In the second stage, the case of a company is introduced in relation to the theory. The company case can either be based on a presentation given by a guest lecturer or on a documented case that has been prepared in advance for the lecture.

In the third stage, the theory and the case are discussed as a whole.

All themes are supported by cases and corporate presentations with a view to giving students application-oriented learning based on a high degree of participant activity.

Office hours for feedback, regular short assignments, quizzes and peer feedback techniques will be used during the lectures to provide feedback to students.
