Course content and structure

The course is centered around the contents of a Innovation dynamics and science applications, with cases mostly from the pharma and medical industries. As such covers a rather broad set of topics. A selection of the topics covered includes idea generation and evaluation, Overview of pharmaceutical drug discovery & development, medical device development and digital development, market and industry analysis, entrepreneurial and corporate innovation, strategic value chain design, business models as well as partnering and team based innovation.

 

Preliminary assignment:
Students are required to read Melissa Schilling, Innovation Management and find an interesting, relevant case of an innovation model within science, and be ready to present it in the first class session.

Class 1: Strategic value & innovation dynamics
Class 2: Pharmaceutical drug, medical device and digital discovery & development
Class 3: Industry, market and technology analysis
Class 4: Entrepreneurial and corporate innovation
Class 5: Customer decision making in health care
Class 6: Creating and capturing value of innovation

Feedback activity: Following class 5 there will be a small assignment which forms the basis of the feedback activity in class 6.

Class 7: Partnering for innovation
Class 8: Open and closed innovation models 
Class 9: Teams and innovation
Class 10: Strategic value chain design
Class 11: Review, wrap-up and exam preparation

Teaching methods
This course is taught using a combination of lectures, cases and group work with an emphasis on case discussions in the class
Feedback during the teaching period
Following class 5 there will be a small assignment which forms the basis of the feedback activity in class 6.
All Home Project Assignments/mini projects are based upon a research question (problem formulation) formulated by the students individually, and must be handed in to the course instructor for his/her approval no later than 12 July 2018. The instructor must approve the research question (problem formulation) no later than 17 July 2018. The approval is a feedback to the student about the instructor's assessment of the problem's relevance and the possibilities of producing a good report.

Preliminary Assignment: To help students get maximum value from ISUP courses, instructors provide a reading or a small number of readings or video clips to be read or viewed before the start of classes with a related task scheduled for class 1 in order to 'jump-start' the learning process.
