Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors: (The first four objectives refer to Ship Design and the latter four to The Maritime Legal Framework)
  • Identify the main factors that determine the capacity and performance of ships
  • Compare key performance indicators for different ship types
  • Analyse and calculate modifications to an existing design or make the first of basic calculations for a completely new design
  • Explain the terminology of naval architecture sufficiently to be able to communicate and discuss design issues with both specialists and non-specialists
  • Explain the basic legal implications of operating vessels
  • Identify the legal risks involved in trading goods to be carried by sea
  • Analyse a number of legal issues and tackle them in an orderly and well reasoned manner

The exam in the subject consists of two parts:
Part 1 - Ship Design:

However, at all written sit-in exams the student has access to the basic IT application package (Microsoft Office (minus Excel), digital pen and paper, 7-zip file manager, Adobe Acrobat, Texlive, VLC player, Windows Media Player), and the student is allowed to bring simple writing and drawing utensils (non-digital). PLEASE NOTE: Students are not allowed to communicate with others during the exam.
Make-up exam/re-exam
Same examination form as the ordinary exam
If the number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination warrants that it may most appropriately be held as an oral examination, the programme office will inform the students that the make-up examination/re-take examination will be held as an oral examination instead.

Course content and structure

This module consists of two main parts.

 

The first part aims at elucidating the role of ship design as a response to perceived or estimated market needs. New ship designs are typical responses to expressed needs from customers with specific transport requirements, new technologies, changes in world politics, new strategies or lessons learnt from previous ship designs. The appropriateness of ships for transport needs, their economy and operability are vital factors of competitiveness within global markets. Competitiveness and hence commercial success depend on the optimum balance between investment and operational costs, position within the target markets and technical and operational innovations. 

 

The second part of this module gives a brief introduction to maritime law, with particular emphasis on issues relevant for a shipping manager such as charter parties, liabilities, tax issues, joint ventures, etc. It aims to give participants sufficient insight into legal issues to be able to carry out fruitful discussions with maritime lawyers. The module also discusses the regulatory regime in shipping and international political lobbying mechanisms, including discussions on EU Competition Laws. 

 
Teaching methods
The module will combine lectures, discussions, group work and case presentations. Reading material will be provided to the participants in beforehand for preparation for the module.

Feedback is given to the student together with the grade when written and oral exams have been evaluated.

The evaluation
At the evaluation unit at CBS’s Economic & Analysis department we ask you to evaluate the overall course. In other words if there has been exercise classes and lectures the evaluation should include both. We evaluate every course and faculty to secure and strengthen the professional level of the offered course.
