At the exam the student should demonstrate the following learning objectives:
  • To demonstrate the ability to comprehend the complex and dynamic inter-relations between different parts of society and culture holistically and from an historically informed perspective.
  • To demonstrate the ability to analyse different types of societies and social institutions through various sociological perspectives, including functionalist and conflict-oriented theories.
  • To demonstrate knowledge of course material concerning sociological approaches to the linkages between economics, culture and society.

Description of the exam procedure

Written exam based on a topic given by teacher.

Groups are assigned by the teacher.

 

 

The exam must be handed in through Digital Exam.

 
Course content and structure

Aim of the course: To provide students with the sociological foundation for understanding different aspects of society and culture, particularly Chinese and Japanese societies. By moving beyond economics and management practices, the course aims to offer a holistic, historically-grounded understanding of Chinese and Japanese societies and cultures. The issues will be relevant to foreigners conducting business in China, Japan and other Chinese-dominant Asian countries because they will learn about the cultural and institutional foundations behind these societies’ practices and behaviour.

Course content: With regards to China, Japan and also other societies, the course will offer specific discussions on (1) contending sociological theories for understanding society and culture; and (2) national and cultural variation in the set-up of institutions, particularly the relationship between the state, markets, and civil society. A set of theoretical and methodological tools for critical and comparative analysis are thus presented to students to further their studies in IBA.
Description of the teaching methods
Lectures and class discussion, with presentations. CBS Learn will be used as a teaching tool.

During the course, in-class quizzes will be deployed. to give students a better overview of whether they are following the expected learning curve.

Feedback is further offered in response to your questions and work whenever feasible although please appreciate that there are often time constraints. We also encourage you to ask questions or make comments in class and use your study group to secure peer feedback on your work.

Further Information

This course is essential for 2nd and 3rd year disciplinary courses in IBA: specifically, Asian Economic Organisation & Competitiveness; and Asian Business Systems - it furthermore complements the 1st Year Project.

 

Please note that this course will be discontinued and will be offered for the last time in autumn 2018. The last exam in the course will be offered in winter 2019/20.
