Learning objectives |
On successful completion of the course, the
student should be able to identify and discuss the organisation in
contextual perspective. Specifically, the student should be able
to:
- Identify and compare concepts and theories covered in the
curriculum
- Identify and discuss characteristics of the relations between
companies and their contexts.
- Account for how contextual elements form, hinder and/or spur
organisational development.
- Identify and explain strengths and weaknesses in the approaches
applied during the course.
- Select, apply and explain the course’s concepts and theories
introduced during the course in an empirical analysis of one or
more organizations in the second year project.

Course prerequisites |
The courses Applied Organisational Analysis,
Qualitative Methods, The Company from a Contextual Perspective, and
Applied Qualitative Methods and Mixed Methods have one integrated
exam. You can only participate in The Company from a Contextual
Perspective if you also register for the other courses: The courses
Applied Organisational Analysis, Qualitative Methods, and Applied
Qualitative Methods and Mixed Methods. |

Course content and structure |
Aim: This course offers an introduction to theories
and empirical cases that cast light upon a company’s position
within a given market and industry and explores
the opportunities and constraints associated with it. Specific
themes include:
- The company and its immediate environment
- The company’s competitive relationships
- The company’s collaborative relationships
- Learning in business relationships
- Industrial dynamics and development
- The company’s market orientation
- Cost management in business relationships
- Knowledge management and development in business
relationships.
