Learning objectives
The course offers students with knowledge about a range of theories, concepts and strategic tools for global supply chain management. The student will attain competences in making global supply chain strategy and in assuming supply chain strategic decision-making tasks. This competence gives the student possibility to take supply chain management to the board room while at the same time possessing knowledge on the globalisation conditions that affect the supply chain.
  • Conceptualise and define global supply chains and global supply chain management.
  • Discuss theories and concepts that aid in understanding, explaining and problem-solving issues related to the management of the Global Supply Chain.
  • Discuss strategic decision-making tasks and criteria in the design of cross-border value chains and networks.
  • Evaluate the applicability of typical supply chain strategic choices, configurations and concepts in cross-border operations.
  • Develop country/region-oriented supply chain strategies, and reflect upon managing global supply chain operations of the future.

Course content and structure

Global supply chain management offers theories, concepts and tools that aid in understanding, explaining and problem-solving issues related to the management of the global supply chain including some of the major challenges that a firm faces in a globalized world.

 

As globalisation and internationalisation efforts intensify, companies are faced with even greater time and distance challenges to manage the supply chain of their products and services, including political, environmental, economic, social, and technological uncertainties. Having knowledge and understanding of strategic supply chain management with a cross-border perspective can aid companies to increase competitiveness within their global supply chain network.

 

This course has been designed to provide students with a more in-depth understanding of the challenges in the management of the global supply chain, the process of supply, production and distribution that makes other strategic objectives possible.

 

The course problematises a wide range of concepts that are at the core of SCM in the cross-border supply chain context. These concepts relate to inter-organisational relationships, information systems, distribution, production, innovation, procurement, sustainability, service, measurement systems, strategy, planning, and more.

 

In this course, particular attention will be given to three overall parts: strategies, processes and management issues including some of the major barriers that a firm faces in a globalised world.
Description of the teaching methods
Teaching is based on interactive lectures, workshops, multi-media presentations and in-class “simulations” and discussions that deliver the basic knowledge on problems and the context of global supply chain management. In-class lectures and discussions are supported with case studies and real life examples. Guest lecturers may be involved for better illustrating the problem detail and the specific context of real life environments. Additionally, in-class assignments are applied for deepening the students understanding of the fundamental approaches and the development of thoughts and arguments in a comprehensive way.
