  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of the characteristics of Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) and the issues in Non-Profit Organization (NPO) management;
  • Identify key characteristics and critical success factors of an NPO; and
  • Suggest strategic and operational measures adequate for addressing the challenges of an NPO, defined by its internal and external contingencies.
  • Participants should demonstrate a clear grasp of what it takes to successfully manage the multi-dimensional aspects a non-profit organization by the end of the course.
Course prerequisites
A bachelor degree. Experiences in serving in a Non-profit organisation, volunteer management, fundraising, and/ or social entrepreneurship will be an advantage.

Course content and structure

Throughout the history of societies we witness that the ability of governments to perform social tasks is very limited. Non-profit organizations (NPOs) play a profound and significant role, and are central to citizenship and society. Yet little is available to the non-profit organization to help with their leadership and management. This course seeks to equip participants with an understanding of NPOs and the necessary knowledge and skills to manage them effectively.
 
Participants will be brought through and develop an understanding of the various issues in managing non-profit organizations, including Volunteer Management System (VMS), Fund Development, Donors Cultivation, and (Servant and Legislative) Leadership.

 

Preliminary assignment: Participants will be asked to discuss the differences between a NPO and a business enterprise, and then to do two tasks (sketch out the social ecosystem of a Danish NPO and state its vision and mission).

All Home Project Assignments/mini projects are based upon a research question (problem formulation) formulated by the students individually, and must be handed in to the course instructor for his/her approval no later than 11 July 2019. The instructor must approve the research question (problem formulation) no later than 16 July 2019. The approval is a feedback to the student about the instructor's assessment of the problem's relevance and the possibilities of producing a good report.

Preliminary Assignment: To help students get maximum value from ISUP courses, instructors provide a reading or a small number of readings or video clips to be read or viewed before the start of classes with a related task scheduled for class 1 in order to 'jump-start' the learning process.
