Course content and structure

The course is focused on innovation dynamics and science applications, with cases mostly from the pharma and medical industries and some from sustainability business. The course covers a broad set of topics including idea generation and evaluation, innovation, overview of bioscience, pharmaceutical drug discovery and development, medical device development, sustainability product examples, strategy models, market and industry analysis, strategic value chain design, business models and plans, entrepreneurial and corporate innovation as well as collaborations and team based project activities.

 

Preliminary assignment:
Students are required to read Melissa Schilling, Innovation Management & Palle Høy Jakobsen, Commercialisation of Biotechnology Research and find an interesting, relevant case of an innovation model within science, and be ready to present it in the first class session.

Class 2: Science, pharmaceutical drug & medical device discovery and development

Class 3: Strategic value chain design & business models

Class 4: Industry, market and technology analysis

Class 5: Entrepreneurial and corporate innovation, cases

Class 6: Customers in health care, cases

Feedback activity: Following class 5 there will be a small assignment which forms the basis of the feedback activity in class 6.

Class 7: Creating and capturing value of innovation

Class 8: Project management for innovation

Class 9: Open and closed innovation

Class 10: Organising for innovation. Teams

Class 11: Review, wrap-up and exam preparation

Description of the teaching methods
This course is taught using a combination of lectures, cases, group work with an emphasis on case discussions in the class.
Feedback during the teaching period
Following class 5 there will be a small assignment which forms the basis of the feedback activity in class 6.

All Home Project Assignments/mini projects are based upon a research question (problem formulation) formulated by the students individually, and must be handed in to the course instructor for his/her approval no later than 11 July 2019. The instructor must approve the research question (problem formulation) no later than 16 July 2019. The approval is a feedback to the student about the instructor's assessment of the problem's relevance and the possibilities of producing a good report.

Preliminary Assignment: To help students get maximum value from ISUP courses, instructors provide a reading or a small number of readings or video clips to be read or viewed before the start of classes with a related task scheduled for class 1 in order to 'jump-start' the learning process.
