Learning objectives |
- To account for the basic elements of Philosophy of
science.
- To explain and evaluate the pros and cons of introduced
qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods and which types of
research questions they are particularly useful for.
- To account for the different types of research schemes
(qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods).
- To justify a logical coherence between the choice of research
question, method of data collection, method of analysis,
theoretical framework, and hypotheses (when relevant).
- To assess how their research scheme leads to the expected
results.
- Follow academic conventions and scientific rigor in the written
(and oral) presentation.

Oral exam based on written product
In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product
must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The
grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and
the individual oral performance. |

If a student is ill during the
regular oral exam, he/she will be able to re-use the project at the
make-up exam. If a student is ill during the writing of the project
and did not contribute to the project, the make-up exam can be
written individually or in groups (provided that other students are
taking the make-up/re-exam). If the student did not pass the
regular exam, he/she must make a new revised project (confer advice
from the examiner) and hand it in on a new deadline specified by
the secretariat.

2 students: 30 minutes
3 students: 45 minutes
4-5 students: 60
minutes

Course content and structure |
This course is placed in the fourth quarter, as it lays out the
academic fundamentals for the upcoming master thesis. The
purpose of the course is to prepare the student for the final
thesis and equip him/her with a research method toolbox of
qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods.
The student should be able:
- To formulate working assumptions based on a (proper)
problem formulation
- To identify and choose a relevant research question
- To choose relevant qualitative, quantitative or mixed-methods
for the underlying research question
- To establish how best to analyse the data (quantitatively
and/or qualitatively)
- To identify and choose relevant theories (and hypotheses when
relevant) for analytic purposes

Description of the teaching methods |
The course is taught through a combination of
lectures, seminars, hands-on experience, and case-studies. Thorough
preparation and in-class participation are expected.
The readings, exercises, and tests will make you familiar with the
various methods within social research so that you can better
decide which is suited for your field of interest. |

Feedback is provided through class-discussions,
peer-group-feedback, and feedback right after the oral
exam. |
