Learning objectives
All of the below learning objectives are specifically aimed at and developed for the life science, biotech and pharmaceutical context. The aim is to enable the students to draw on prior studies and skills from bioscience and management to make informed decisions and assessments of bio-business.
  • Account for the main terms and definitions central in economics and management of innovation as well as IP management and Entrepreneurship
  • Describe the internal innovation process and the feedback loops of innovation activities
  • Make informed choices with respect to R&D projects
  • Describe and assess the potential for formal and informal external knowledge sourcing and how it may help the organization in its pursuit of the next generation of innovations
  • Analyse how industrial settings may influence the choices made in terms of R&D investments, innovation strategies, entrepreneurial venturing and IP management

Course prerequisites
This is a mandatory course for the MSc in Business Administration and Bioentrepreneurship.

Same examination form as the ordinary exam
If the number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination warrants that it may most appropriately be held as an oral examination, the programme office will inform the students that the make-up examination/re-take examination will be held as an oral examination instead.
Course content and structure

The course covers the following themes:

  1. Strategy and conduct of bio-sector firms
  2. Innovation and entrepreneurship in bio-sectors
  3. Competitive dynamics of sub-industries of the bio-sector (e.g. pharmaceuticals vs. Industrial biotech)
  4. The role of institutions in the bio-sector (e.g. IPR related issues, public regulation and universities)

The course examines factors shaping opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship, and the business implications of those opportunities. The theme of strategy choices emphasize alternatives faced by emerging bio-firms and the relevant tools for strategic decision. A section of the course is focused on the strategic dimensions of patenting.
 

Description of the teaching methods
Lectures, group work and simulations. Case-based teaching and use of computer-based tools for patent-based analysis of technological competition. Guest faculty from industry appears frequently in co-teaching with academic faculty.
Feedback during the teaching period
The teacher will hold a session after the examination and give feedback on the results of the written examination
