Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The overall aim of this course is to deepen the students’ knowledge of the economic, political and socio-cultural context in Spanish-speaking parts of the world, and to strengthen their written communication skills in their chosen language. The specific aim of the course is to develop students’ understanding of globalisation and internationalisation processes and their manifestations in and impact upon national and regional contexts.

The course is built up around two dimensions: content and language. The overall aim is to deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of economic institutions, organisations, actors in selected Spanish speaking parts of the world and to strengthen their written communication skills.

The specific aim of the course is to develop students’ understanding of the relationship between economic institutions and actors, and their implications for competitiveness.

The course focuses on the contemporary economic development in Latin America  and Spain, and explores how these two regions are performing in terms of international and regional competitiveness. The course addresses Latin America’s contemporary economic development and international competitiveness in relation to specific topics such as the role of multinationals and democracy, and the role of business as an increasingly important political force in the region. Key topics include: foreign direct investments, and the development of the regional economic and trade blocs, such as Mercosur, Pacific Alliance and Prosur. We will also look at the implications of human development for economic development in both regions.

The language dimension is aimed at improving the students’ written production (grammar and lexical skills, use of conjunctions, and idiomatic expressions) as well as their reading and comprehension.
