Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

This course consists of an in-depth analysis of international trade and investment in emerging and advanced economies. It also analyses how key factors related to trade and investment change over time in central regional blocs, such as the European Union, ASEAN and MERCOSUR. The course focuses in-depth on trade and foreign direct investment. It also examines innovation, and international financial regimes. It presents and analyses relevant theories, concepts, data and indicators pertaining to international trade and investment. During the course, we draw on cases and data, in order to illustrate challenges, strategies and dilemmas from the perspective of firms and of states, in the broader international political environment. The course considers crises and developments that affect ITI, such as the financial crisis of 2008, the rise of populism, the US-China trade and technology war and the COVID-19 crisis. It also addresses current issues on the international agenda, such as global environmental challenges and ethical issues in investment and trade.
