Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The course Macroeconomics and Trade will introduce  the students to the fundamental theories of Macroeconomics, International Trade and Trade Policies and apply these theories to global trade flows and trade developments. The lectures on the structure and dynamics of international trade models provide the backbone for the following class discussions on shipping trade flows of goods and how economic and political changes alter these flows.

 

The content of this course overarch macroeconomy, international economy and international trade aspects in an attempt to provide the students with a better understanding of the diverse set of factors influencing the short and longer term demand for shipping services.

Description of the teaching methods
This course employs a mix of lectures followed by in-class topic specific plenum case discussions enabled by the students work in study groups. Lectures will cover core concepts and theories in macroeconomics and international trade, and all the class is expected to participate in an interactive discussion. Empirical cases will be included in order to demonstrate the practical importance of the concepts and theories introduced in lectures. In such cases, the case material will have to be read and prepared by students in study groups before the lecture. In the class students will be presented with questions regarding the case. This will provide the basis for a greater level of interaction and student understanding of theoretical notions.
