Learning objectives
Knowledge:
Through the course, students will acquire research-based knowledge about theories and methods in Operations & Logistics Planning as well as a number of models that can be applied in connection with the organisations design and management of production systems and supply chains. At the practical level, students acquire knowledge about how theories, methods and models can be applied in specific organisational contexts. The aim is that students will be able to understand and reflect on the theories, methods and models and their application in specific contexts.

Skills:
After completing the course, students are expected to be able to:
• Apply the research based theories, methods and models of the course to analyse complex issues related to the design and management of production systems and supply chains.
• Argue for and chose relevant analyses and solutions to problems within the field of operations and logistics management and in this connection be able to present and evaluate identified solutions.
• Assess the theoretical and practical implications in the design and management of the internal and external supply chain.

Competences:
Through the course, students acquire competences that enable them to:
• Identify, analyse and present solutions to complex operations and logistics management issues through the application of the theories, methods and models of the course.
• Independently participate in professional collaboration with both internal and external partners.

Description of the exam procedure

As a basis for the oral exam, the student draws an exam question that is based on the theories and methods of the course. The student can prepare an answer to the exam question and this answer is the starting point for the oral exam. As part of the oral exam, elaborating questions will be asked by the examiners on topics within the field of the course.
Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The Operations & Logistics Planning course is about decision-making. The course objective is to provide the students with an understanding of how the principles, theories and concepts of operations and logistics management can be used to improve operational effectiveness within various companies. The task of managing a firm involves making trade-offs among a range of interrelated decisions which have a major impact on performance.  This  task  is  key  for  any  organization  and  is  what  Operations Management is concerned with order fulfillment, supply & demand planning, sales & operations planning, process management, lean management, among others. Logistics Management deals with the supply chain that plans, implements and controls the flow and storage of goods, products and services and related information to meet customers’ needs.  It covers planning decisions related to transportation management, warehousing, inventory management, distribution network design and third- party logistics.

 

The Operations & Logistics Planning course includes the following central issues:


• Supply chain management: Structures, business processes and management components (including management of objectives)
• Integrating the flow of goods and information based on the individual enterprise (planning via Demand Management, Sales and Operations Planning and Master Production Schedule and the relation of these areas with production management concepts such as MRP and JIT/LEAN)
• Transport and distribution
• Forecasting and inventory management
• Purchasing
• Product design and mass customisation in supply chains
• Supply chains and information systems

 

 
Description of the teaching methods
The course will be delivered in a blended learning format which imply that students are expected to prepare in advance to each in-class session. Preparation includes reading of course materials as well as working with a diverse range of online materials such as case studies, videos and business simulations.

The course builds on both conceptual frameworks for operations and logistics management as well as quantitative tools and techniques for solving operations problems. The course will consist of lectures, case discussions, group presentations, simulations and workshops. Active preparation and participation are expected from the students. In class sessions will predominantly focus on interactive activities which facilitates students to develop knowledge, competencies and skills as set out in the course learning objectives. This includes problem solving, analysis and reflection on exercises and cases of varying depth and complexity. Throughout the course, students’ own professional experiences and examples are used in discussions.

Teaching is on Thursday from 18:05 to 20:40 in weeks 37-41, 43-45.There is no teaching in week 42.
