Learning objectives
The aim of this course is to gain an in-depth understanding of the different factors that enable and constrain corporate and urban regenerative sustainability. The course:
  • Introduces students to a variety of analytical and practical perspectives on sustainability related leadership
  • Demonstrate and offer tools on how organizations communicate and shape change relating to the sustainability transition.
  • Learn about key technolocial developments driving the sustainability transition
  • Collaborate and explore key trends and strategies with a number of the Scandinavian leaders supporting this transition.
Course prerequisites
This course is a special course limited to cand. merc. students returning from exchange. To qualify for the course you:

1. Enrolled in a cand.merc. programs at CBS
2. Have to have passed 28 ECTS during your exchange
3. Have to submit a motivational statement to outexchange@cbs.dk

Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

Approaches to sustainability have focused on biophysical limits and the need to reduce environmental damage, often by means of strong restrictions on human activities. More recently, however, there has been growing interest in incentivizing activities that simultaneously improve both human and environmental wellbeing. This “regenerative” approach to sustainability is the operative model of sustainability at CBS. Two key attributes of regenerative sustainability are a search for net positive
outcomes and the requirement a simultaneous focus on human and environmental outcomes. While harm reduction and damage limitation activities will continue to be needed in many contexts, the emphasis in regenerative sustainability is on looking first for ways to contribute to environmental and well-being improvement. Such a net positive approach not only goes further than net zero approaches focused on reducing harm, but is much more engaging to most stakeholders, a critical factor
in building the social support needed to achieve a more sustainable world.

 

This five-day course explores the value-added of regenerative sustainability in a business and management context. It explores the individual, organizational and communicative aspects of sustainability and the role of the firm in transitions of socio-economic systems to sustainability. Our unit of analysis is the city, where firms increasingly partner with government, utility companies, and civil society to help build sustainable cities.

 

While the course emphasizes the operational aspects of CSR and regenerative sustainability, it also showcases cutting-edge research in the field and explores how theoretical models can contribute to a better decision making in this emerging field. To give participants a sense of the richness, diversity and complexity of regenerative sustainability, the course is presented by an international team of academic experts and practitioners.

Description of the teaching methods
This course blends a variety of pedagogical methods. You learn through interactive lectures combined with case study discussions. We will also use some short video supplements to explore selected issues more in depth. It is important that you read case studies prior to the lecture in which they are discussed. Please think about answers to the case questions, which are listed in this syllabus, as these will form the basis of class discussion.
