Learning objectives
After completing this course, students are expected to be able to:
  • Solve real-world problems and cases using the tools and theoretical concepts from basic corporate finance.
  • Explain alternative approaches that can be used to solve these problems and cases.
  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of such approaches and how the choice among these might influence the solution to the problem.
  • Relate the choice between various approaches to theoretical and empirical findings in corporate finance.

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

A written case assignment based on a case or a subject chosen by the teacher. The assignment must be formulated and given to the students at least nine days prior to the expiration of the deadline. It should be 10 pages long and submitted to CBS Digital Exam. The exam is held internally, and the assignment is put forward and assessed by the relevant faculty.
Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The course introduces the main topics in corporate finance, which are critical for understanding and analyzing the many financial issues that face modern firms. These issues include, for example, how to evaluate investment decisions, how to balance risk versus return, and how to use different sources of financing to ensure the capital needed by a firm. Other topics covered include: valuation methods, performance evaluation, risk management, corporate governance, mergers and acquisition, venture capital, and private equity.

Description of the teaching methods
The course is structured in sessions, where each session is focusing on a specific topic. The course has diverse teaching methods using lectures, cases, readings and discussions. The class meetings are interactive and require ongoing engagement of the students.

Feedback is given to the student together with the grade when written and oral exams have been evaluated.

The evaluation
At the evaluation unit at CBS’s Economic & Analysis department we ask you to evaluate the overall course. In other words if there has been exercise classes and lectures the evaluation should include both. We evaluate every course and faculty to secure and strengthen the professional level of the offered course.
