In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance, see also the rules about examination forms in the programme regulations.

The size of the written report is 30 pages for 3 students and 40 pages for 4-5 students in the group. If granted an exemption to write individually or in pairs, students must submit 20 or 30 pages respectively. Exemptions are only given due to unusual circumstances.

If the project is failed, a substantial project revision must be undertaken prior to re-submission. To facilitate this, within eight days after the oral examination, the examiners submit a written report on the project, outlining ways to improve it.

Re-examination when the regular examination is failed by one group member, is a 30 minutes individual oral exam based upon the same project revised according to proposals set by the examiner.

Re-examination when ill at the oral exam is a 30 minutes individual oral exam based upon the same project.

Re-examination when ill during the writing of the project is a 30 minutes individual oral exam based upon an individual written project.
Description of the exam procedure

If granted an exemption to write individually, students have an oral exam of 30 min. If granted an exemption to write in a group of two, students have an oral exam of 40 min. total.

Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The Year 1 Research Project is a research-oriented, participatory group project in which the student group takes up an original research topic inspired by the theme: “Sustainable, Global Society as the context for business or organizations.” Project groups select a problem they wish to study and define a research question or issue, which serves as a guideline for the project, with guidance from an assigned supervisor.

 

Theoretical, empirical and methodological material from the first year courses should be the main academic foundation of the project work, particularly the Qualitative Business Research course, but supplemental material may be included if this is essential or helpful to a proper project inquiry.

 

The Year 1 Research Project does not oblige primary data collection or analysis, secondary data is sufficient. That said, primary data sources are welcome if appropriate to the already challenging nature of the First Year Project, with supervisor assent.

 

The project should be structured as a standard social science report, including an Introduction, where the research issue is stated and literature reviewed, method, data and findings, discussion, references, table, figure, and appendix sections. The American Psychological Association (APA) paper format offers one well-known one way to structure the project report.

Description of the teaching methods
Intro lecture and group work in the formed project groups.
Feedback during the teaching period
In the framework of this project course, feedback is given on the basis of a written assignment, such as a preliminary project proposal. In a scheduled workshop setting the student groups are then given the chance to present their work and receive project proposal specific comments from a designated peer project group and a CBS faculty facilitator.

This course will is a continuation and updated version of the course BBLCO2020U Year 1 Research Project on Business and Organizations in a Global Society. Students that have not yet passed the old course by summer 2021 will partake in the exam in this course in summer 2022.
