Course content, structure and pedagogical approach
The first semester of Area Studies in Spanish is built on two dimensions: Content and Language
The content dimension of Spanish 1 provides a basic historical, geographical, political and cultural introduction to Spain and Spanish America, covering their identities, political cultures, economies and institutions as well as their international relations. The topics, concepts and perspectives raised during the course will help develop the student's cultural sensitivity and understanding of viewpoints, narratives and institutions that are specific to the language area.
Topics dealt with during the course include: Geographical and regional diversity of more than 489 million native Spanish speaking people in both regions (more than 585 million people speaks Spanish globally by 2020), the processes of independence of Spanish America, nation formation and the emergence of the post-colonial modern nation-state in Spanish America.
The language dimension is aimed at improving the students’ basic language skills (grammar and vocabulary), pronunciation and fluency; as well as their reading and oral comprehension of the foreign language. Emphasis will also be placed on learning and exercising phrases needed in order to make presentations and to participate actively in class discussions.
Integration The course integrates with the parallel course Cultural Analysis for Business. At the same time, the course provides the foundation for progression within Area Studies 2 - Spanish that focuses on markets, institutions, economic development and economic integration, as well as the challenges for globalization processes in the national and local language areas in question. |

Description of the teaching methods
All teaching will take place in Spanish and all reading will also be in Spanish. The course aims at integrating content and language learning so that the foreign language is used to acquire content combined with language instruction. A combination of lectures, class discussions and student presentations will develop the students’ knowledge and ability to analyse and understand current cultural and social processes in the chosen region. The course takes a blended approach to learning, integrating online and face-to-face activities.
Feedback during the teaching period
Feedback will be given continuously through oral
presentations, written and oral assignments, both as teacher
supervised peer-to-peer feedback, quizzes and tests (online and
offline), and as individual/group discussions (online and offline).
Students are encouraged to participate in feedback activities and
to make use of the weekly office hours for individual feedback
(appointments during office hours can also be scheduled online).
The students are offered 2 voluntary home assignments of 3 pages each, one addressing content and the other language. These written exercises will help the students to work independently with the topics and to train linguistic phenomena needed for the oral discussions. |
