Course Goal and Objectives The goal of the course is to provide students with an understanding of how organizations work based on organization and management scholarship.
The objectives are that students will: 1) develop an ability to identify, analyze, and discuss important aspects and determinants of work behavior through an organizational perspective; and 2) apply theories from the course to competently and strategically solve problems, effect successful organizational change, and be more effective leaders and managers, especially in an international scale.
Course Content The course will focus on the crucial elements of organizations (e.g., organization structure and culture) and how they relate to work behavior and management goals (e.g., learning, innovation, and social responsibility). We will examine these topics across sectors and types of organizations with particular attention to the global business environment. The course is anchored on organization theory literature complemented by insights from cutting-edge research by course lecturers and current media debates about organizations.
Pedagogical Approach The course follows an approach that emphasizes the development of critical thinking among students through continuous application of concepts and discussion about their premises and relevance across contexts.
Course Format The course will be delivered through a mix of lectures and workshops. The lecturers will introduce students to the main ideas related to organization analysis. The workshops will provide students with an opportunity to exercise these course concepts, models, and theories vis-à-vis particular situations and cases. Guest speakers, including alumni from the IB program, will elaborate on the topics analyzed in class and their link to practice. There will also be periodic online sessions for feedback and clarification of emerging questions from students. |

Office hours will provide a full opportunity for student feedback, and there will be a weekly dedicated online session for feedback on workshop exercises and emerging questions. Feedback will also take place during workshops, including facilitated student-to-student feedback. The course is based on selected academic papers, management publications based on research, and case studies from media and scholarly sources. All these will be made available on Canvas. The students are expected to read the relevant texts for workshops and lectures beforehand.
We will also use the following book as a core text that provides students with a general introduction to this study area.
