Course content, structure and pedagogical approach | ||||||||||||||||||||||
Developing new products and services is vital to most organizations, whether these are startups or more established firms. However, success rates of new products and services are notoriously low. Successful new product development requires the use of specific strategies and competencies as well as skillful project management. This course aims to provide students with analytical and practical tools and capabilities that will allow them to understand and manage the challenges and opportunities of developing new products in various organizational contexts. It covers key concepts involved in end-to-end product development and project management including stakeholder identification, empathy mapping, idea generation, and prototyping. Using state-of-the-art theories and practices such as design thinking, design sprints, or agile vs. waterfall project planning, the course will equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed for managing projects in a complex, uncertain, and ambiguous world.
This course is for students who are interested in corporate innovation, venture creation or project management and is designed to follow a problem-based learning approach. The central element is applied, experiential learning through a course project in which students develop novel solutions to a real-world challenge. Students will be supported on their own development journey with theories, tools, workshops, and coaching relevant to the particular phase of their project. They will also have the opportunity to interact with visiting practitioners in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship. The course will start with a Kickoff Day with the goals of creating a common knowledge baseline, providing opportunities for first-hand experiences, and building teams for the group project. Over the following weeks students will be guided through a typical product development process from idea generation, assessment, and selection to iterative development and testing. At each stage they will receive input on the relevant concepts and theories to guide their learning experience and project efforts. |
