Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The need and demand for healthcare always exceeds the funding for health care systems. Hence, there is a need for prioritization between which interventions to introduce and which not to. The challenge lies in arriving at a decision, taking into account the health benefits, costs and opportunity costs, as well as ethical aspects. Decision-makers’ demand for information on the cost-effectiveness of new interventions is increasing around the world with more standardized and more advanced methods being utilized.

This course introduces health systems financing, the development and current state of health care prioritization based on the Danish setting and with perspectives to prioritization settings around the world. The theory and methods used in health economic evaluation will be thoroughly presented and discussed using practical cases. This includes the concepts of quality-adjusted life years (QALY) and decision analytic modelling. Typical challenges faced by life science companies and public decision makers will be analyzed and discussed using real world cases. The participant will get a fundamental understanding of how economic evaluation can contribute to managing public budgets, support new investments and inform product development and market access. Furthermore, the participants will learn to navigate in the prioritization landscape.
