  • Develop a research question or issue appropriate to the theme: “Sustainable, Global Society as the context for business or organizations.”

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance, see also the rules about examination forms in the programme regulations.

While the overall maximum page length for First Year projects is, as stated, 40 pages, the maximum page length allowed changes according to group size. Thus, maximum project report length is 30 pages for 3 students. It is 40 pages for project groups of 4-5 students. If granted an exemption to write individually or in pairs, students must submit report of 20 or 30 maximum pages respectively. Exemptions are only given due to unusual circumstances following a dispensation request to the Study Board. No minimum page length is specified for project reports.

If the project is failed, a substantial project revision must be undertaken prior to re-submission. To facilitate this, within eight days after the oral examination, the examiners submit a written report on the project to the student(s), outlining ways to improve it.

Re-examination when the regular examination is failed by one group member, is a 30 minute individual oral exam based upon the same project revised according to proposals set by the examiner.

Re-examination when ill at the oral exam is a 30 minutes individual oral exam based upon the same project.

Re-examination when ill during the writing of the project is a 30 minutes individual oral exam based upon an individual written project.
Description of the exam procedure

If granted an exemption to write individually, students have an oral exam of 30 min. If granted an exemption to write in a group of two, students have an oral exam of 40 min. total.
Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The Year 1 Research Project is a research-oriented, participatory group project in which the student group takes up an original research topic inspired by this theme: “Sustainable, Global Society as the context for business or organizations.” Accordingly, the project group research question or issue focus should be a macro-level cultural inquiry into matters related to the goal(s) of a sustainable, global society within which business or organizations of interest function.

 

For project work, the self-constituted project groups craft an original research question from BLC course material. Consider course material from globalization and sustainability, cultural analysis, micro or macroeconomics, area studies, or quantitative business. This topical development arises from an analysis of data in coursework and curiosity about ambiguities in society. Working together, the initial research topic is refined from literature review, studied in light of approprate method, and resolved with guidance from an assigned supervisor.

 

The Year 1 Research Project does not oblige primary data collection or analysis, secondary data is sufficient. That said, primary data sources are welcome if appropriate to the already challenging nature of the First Year Project, with supervisor assent.

 

The project should be structured as a standard social science report, including an Introduction, where the research issue is stated and literature reviewed, method, data and findings, discussion, references, table, figure, and appendix sections. The American Psychological Association (APA) paper format offers one well-known one way to structure the project report.
Description of the teaching methods
Intro lecture and group work in the formed project groups.
Feedback during the teaching period
In the framework of this project course, feedback is given on the basis of a written assignment, such as a preliminary project proposal. In a scheduled workshop setting the student groups are then given the chance to present their work and receive project proposal specific comments from a designated peer project group and a CBS faculty facilitator.
