Learning objectives
To achieve grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors:
  • Using Excel to calculate the time value of money, internal rate of return, and net present value.
  • How to use financial models to analyze financial results, including pro forma financial statements with sales and profits.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental financial forecasting.
  • The financial analysis and mathematics of foreign currency transactions, corporate valuation, capital budgeting, inventory valuation, and profit margins.
  • Learning the analytical skills involved in reading and interpreting a firm's financial position using excel, and financial data, to develop financial models and better business decisions.
  • Develop the ability to solve quantitative problems related to risk and return, security valuation, bond valuation, and portfolio optimization.
  • Understanding the usefulness of data visualizations and how to draft an executive summary.
Course prerequisites
At least one Introductory course in finance plus an introductory course in financial accounting and basic knowledge of Excel.

Make-up exam/re-exam
Same examination form as the ordinary exam
If the number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination warrants that it may most appropriately be held as an oral examination, the programme office will inform the students that the make-up examination/re-take examination will be held as an oral examination instead.
Retake exam: 4 hour written sit-in exam, new exam question.

Exam form for 3rd attempt (2nd retake): The second retake is always an online oral exam (20 minutes online oral exam with no preparation time) with one internal examiner and an internal co-examiner.
Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

In this class, you will learn to analyze financial data in Excel using Pivot Tables and various Excel financial functions and financial concepts. These concepts include: 
-Capital budgeting and time value of money 
-Corporate bonds and stock valuation models

-Discounted Cash flows
-Portfolio analysis & capital asset pricing model 
-Forecasting Sales and Profits

A strong understanding of Excel and finance are necessary for students wishing to enter the finance job market! This course combines the basic theory of finance with the intensive implementation of all concepts in Excel. This course will give you a better understanding of financial theory and (of course) valuable skills in Excel.

Description of the teaching methods
This course will be a blended learning course, three weeks in the traditional classroom and two weeks online. For online class sessions, Instructors will apply direct/live teaching through a link (Zoom) and or pre-recorded material.
Feedback during the teaching period
I teach interactively—a combination of lectures, theory of finance, and Excel. I expect students to follow my lectures, using Excel to implement the financial models explained in class. I will discuss in class how to best prepare for the final exam.

Ordinary 6 weeks course 

 

Preliminary Assignment:  The Nordic-9 pre-course is foundational for the summer university and identical for all bachelor courses. Students will receive an invitation with all details by the end of May. The assignment has two parts. 1.) online lectures and tutorials that student can access at their own time and 2.) one synchronous workshop which will be offered both online and in-person at several dates and times before the official start of the summer university courses. Sign-up is first come first serve. All students are expected to complete this assignment before classes begin.
