Throughout the course, students will acquire
research-based knowledge about theories, methods, and models that
can be applied to operations and logistics management. At the
practical level, students will learn how theories, methods, and
models can be applied to specific organizational problems. The aim
is that students will be able to understand and reflect on the
theories, methods, and models and their application in specific
contexts.
After completing the course, students are expected to be able to: • Apply the research-based theories, methods, and models of the course to analyze complex operations and logistics management problems. • Argue for and choose relevant frameworks to analyze problems within operations and logistics management. • Argue for the optimal solutions for the identified problems. • Assess the theoretical and practical implications in the design and management of the internal and external supply chain. • Independently participate in professional collaboration with both internal and external partners. |

Course content, structure and pedagogical approach | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Operations & Logistics Planning course is about decision-making. The course objective is to provide the students with an understanding of how the principles, theories, and concepts of operations management can be used to improve operational effectiveness within various organizations. Managing a firm involves making trade-offs among a range of interrelated decisions which have a major impact on a firm's performance (e.g., cost, quality, flexibility, dependability, speed, innovation, sustainability). Operations Management is concerned with managing performance management systems, supply and demand management, process management, lean management, and quality management, among others. Logistics Management deals with planning decisions related to transportation management, warehousing, inventory management, distribution network design, and third-party logistics. The course will also cover recent developments in digital technologies, such as industrial digital platforms.
The Operations & Logistics Planning course includes the following central issues:
• Inventory management • Managing capacity • Process management and Busines Process Reengineering (BPR) • Lean operations and agile operations • Quality management and process control and Statistical Process Control (SPC) • Modularity, product, service and digital processes, and industrial digital platforms

Description of the teaching methods | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
The course will be delivered in a blended
learning format which implies that students are expected to prepare
in advance for each in-class session. Preparation includes reading
course materials and working with a diverse range of online
materials such as case studies, videos, and business simulations.
The course builds on conceptual frameworks and quantitative tools and techniques for solving operations problems. The course will consist of lectures, case discussions, group presentations, simulations, and workshops. Active preparation and participation are expected from the students. In-class sessions will predominantly focus on interactive activities which facilitate students to develop knowledge, competencies, and skills as set out in the course learning objectives. This includes problem-solving, analysis, and reflection on exercises and cases of varying depth and complexity. Students’ professional experiences and examples are used throughout the course in discussions. |
