Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

Developing new products and services is vital to organizations, whether these are startups or established firms. However, success rates of new products and services are notoriously low. Successful new product development requires the use of specific strategies and competencies as well as skillful project management. This course aims to provide students with analytical and practical tools and capabilities that will allow them to understand and manage the challenges and opportunities of developing new products in various organizational contexts. It covers key concepts involved in end-to-end product development and project management including stakeholder identification, empathy mapping, idea generation, and prototyping. Using state-of-the-art theories and practices such as design thinking, design sprints, or agile vs. waterfall project planning, the course will equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed for managing projects in a complex, uncertain, and ambiguous world.

This is an intensive and rewarding course for everyone who is interested in innovation, venture creation, or project management. The course is designed to follow a problem-based learning approach and requires active participation from students, within classroom activities and discussions as well as working in project teams inside and outside the classroom. Through the course, students get to experience the true new product development and project management process. The central element is applied, experiential learning through a course project in which students will develop novel solutions to a real-world challenge posed by a partnering local business. Students will be supported on their own development journey with theories, tools, workshops, and coaching relevant to the particular phase of their project in collaboration with entrepreneurial guest speakers and coaches from the Copenhagen School of Entrepreneurship (CSE). Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to interact with other visiting practitioners in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship. The course begins with a Kickoff Day designed to create a common knowledge baseline and support students in building teams for the group project. After that students are introduced to the company challenge as the basis for their team project work. Over the following weeks, students will be guided through a typical product development process from idea generation, assessment, and selection to iterative development and testing. At each stage, they will receive input and feedback on the relevant concepts and theories to guide their learning experience and team project efforts. In the final week of the course, students will have the chance to pitch their solutions to company representatives and other panel experts at a Demo Day for which they will receive training, coaching, and pitch preparation.

Description of the teaching methods
The pedagogical approach aims at advancing the students’ knowledge and competence development in the areas of new product development and project management using a mix of activities:
• In-person lectures on the relevant theoretical concepts and theories based on state-of-the-art research in the fields of creativity, innovation, product development, organizational learning, and project management
• Practical hands-on, tool-based workshops will give the students first-hand experience of what it means to develop products and manage a project
• Project-based teamwork activities to be completed partially outside of in-class time.
• Guest lectures and visiting practitioners of innovation and entrepreneurship will help students learn about different approaches to product development and project management as well as generalize their learnings to a variety of contexts
• Guided reflections on the group project considering the course literature and theories will help students connect their experiential learnings to the course materials.
• Feedback on the group project will advance the final report and stimulate learning processes in relation to the course content
Feedback during the teaching period
The course incorporates various modes of feedback. Students will receive feedback from the course teacher on their projects and learning progress. Additionally, there will be opportunities for peer feedback through exercises and presentations. The aim is to facilitate learning-by-doing, learning by observing, and learning by explaining and reflecting.
