At the end of the course the student should be able to:
  • Content:
  • Write a well-structured and faithful summary in Spanish of a text, that is, a summary that captures the essential points and arguments of the author while respecting the argumentation line and chronology of the text.
  • Show a clear understanding of economic institutions and actors in the regions studied, and their implications for intercultural management and corporate communication based on the concepts and themes in the syllabus.
  • Read and understand a written question and provide a written answer in Spanish that is coherent, intelligible and logically related to the question posed. The answer must be a balanced discussion of viewpoints.
  • Language:
  • Present the exam topic in Spanish using an appropriate vocabulary.
  • Comprehend the questions posed in the examination and answer in coherent Spanish so that the responses are intelligible.

The number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination may warrant that it most appropriately be held as an oral examination. Description of the exam procedure

The exam is held in two steps:

First the students are asked to write a 1 - 2 pages summary of an unknown text dealing with a topic from the course syllabus.

Second the students are asked to write 1 - 2 pages, answering 3 out of 5 questions based on the course syllabus.

Two grades are given: one for content and one for language.

Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

 

The third semester of Area Studies in Spanish is built on two dimensions: Content and Language

 

The overall aim of this course is to deepen the students’ knowledge of the economic, political and socio-cultural context of firms in the Spanish speaking countries, and to strengthen their written communication skills in their chosen language.

 

The specific aim of the course is to develop students’ understanding of the relationship between economic institutions, organizations and markets, and their implications for international business and sustainability.

 

The content dimension in regards to the specific aim will therefore introduce and reflect the language areas perspectives upon topics like general business management and corporate communication with a focus on intercultural management, business cultures and communication, organizational structures, and the challenges of digitalization and sustainability.

 

The language dimension is aiming at improving the students’ written production and expression in a professional context. Focus is on grammar and lexical skills, use of conjunctions, and idiomatic expressions as well as reading and comprehension. Emphasis will also be put on learning and practising phrases needed in order to make presentations and participate in class discussions.

 

 

Integration

The course builds on the Spanish Area Studies of the 1st and 2nd Semester courses. It also complements the themes of the parallel course teaching in Organization, Culture and Communication, and in International Business and Sustainability.

 

Nordic nine

In the course the students acquire the knowledge to help resolve global challenges by understan­ding why and in what ways history and cultural backgrounds make actors differ in their approach to resolving global challenges. The knowledge helps the students to contribute to the successful completion of transnational negotiations and projects. They learn to approach foreign cultures in an unbiased way and to understand the motivation for other people’s behaviour based on a compassionate attitude and an ability to communicate in a foreign language.

 

Description of the teaching methods
All teaching and reading will take place in Spanish. Class teaching involving lectures, student presentations, group work, exercises and discussion.

The course aims at integrating content and language learning so that the foreign language is used to acquire content combined with language instruction. A combination of lectures, class discussions and student presentations will develop students’ knowledge and ability to analyse and understand current cultural, economic and social processes in the chosen region.

Written exercises will help the students to work independently with the topics and to train linguistic phenomena that they will need for the oral discussions. The students are offered 2 voluntary written assignments of 3 pages each. One for content and one for language. These exercises will help the students to work independently with the topics and to practice linguistic phenomena needed for written Spanish in a professional context. The course embraces Blended Learning and seeks to integrate online and offline activities.
Feedback during the teaching period
Feedback will be given continuously through written and oral assignments, both as teacher supervised peer-to-peer feedback, quizzes and tests (online and offline) and as individual/group discussions (online and offline). Students will receive a short feedback on their presentations. Written exercises will help the students to work independently with the topics and to train linguistic phenomena needed for the oral discussions. Students are encouraged to participate in feedback activities and to make use of the weekly office hours for individual feedback (office hours can also be online by arrangement). The students are offered 2 voluntary individual written assignments of 3 pages each that will receive written feedback from the teacher.
