Learning objectives
The overall aim of the course Global Transportation and Maritime Logistics is to provide the student with an understanding of how world trade drives global transportation and further, how global material flows can be managed by logistics and supply chain management principles. Due to its global character, a special emphasis is given to maritime logistics and cross-border issues subject to ongoing processes of digitalization. At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
  • Explain how global trade impacts global transportation and maritime logistics as well as identify and discuss recent developments, such as ongoing digitalization and sustainability efforts, in global transport chains.
  • Demonstrate know-how of actual trade practice, including contracting, customs and documentary paperwork, means and modes of payment, transport management as well as risk, security and compliance management.
  • Outline a plan for export/import movements of cargo in concordance with the present European Union legal environment and critically evaluate supply chain risk, security and compliance management issues in the plan.
  • Identify and explain critical elements in the choice of transport mode including intermodal transport solutions.

The number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination may warrant that it most appropriately be held as an oral examination. The programme office will inform the students if the make-up examination/re-take examination instead is held as an oral examination including a second examiner or external examiner.
Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The course sets out by introducing the domains of international transport and logistics. Especially the impact of globalization and integration of world trade on maritime logistics operations are discussed. This includes the impact of internationalization processes on sourcing, manufacturing and distribution strategies.

 

Next, the course introduces the student to the processes and activities necessary to make materials and products cross international borders. International trade practices such as contracting, customs and documentary paperwork, means and modes of payment plus transport management including issues are central to this part of the course. Attention is also paid to the choice of transport mode, intermodal transport solutions and current challenges concerning the ongoing digitalization of the transport chain.

 

In the third section of the course, supply chain risk, security and compliance issues as well as sustainabillity issues in maritime logistics are presented and discussed.

 

The final section discusses contemporary and future issues of importance to global transportation and maritime logistics including the impact of new digital technologies.

Description of the teaching methods
Dialogue lectures and in-class case discussions. Case discussions are based on small case stories that provide essential knowledge of the many factors of global transportation and maritime logistics.

Study material is a collection of academic articles available online through the CBS e-Library; an accompanying text book, David. P. (2021) 'International Logistics - The Management of International Trade Operations', 6th ed.; and case articles primarily from the trade press.

Oral feedback on case discussions in class/online. Short written summary of the discussions are provided by teacher.

This course is part of the minor in Maritime Business but can be taken separately.

 

Recent years of pandemic and other supply chain disruptions have emphasized the importance of the global supply chains of which transportation and maritime logistics are essential operational aspects. Knowledge on global transportation is necessary for supply chain flows of materials and information. This knowledge is placed in a global and therefore broad context. Through global transportation, value is created from global connections for local logistics and transport companies/actors as well as consumers. There are of course obvious dilemmas regarding transportation, in particular that of greenhouse gas emissions and other sorts of environmental pollution. The course presents compassion both about trade and moving goods to end-users around the worldwhile reducing negative externalities of transportation. The pedagogy of the course is set up to facilitate critical reflection and discussions.
