Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The shipping industry faces many business challenges and significant decisions. While the abundance of data creates opportunities for business leaders to make better decisions, extracting value from business data is far from straightforward.

This course provides you with a solid understanding of how to turn data into valuable business insights and improve decision-making in shipping. The course focuses on deploying analytical methods to answer essential shipping business questions, including freight trading, pricing, revenue, chartering, investment and sustainability.

The course is ideal for students who want to advance their analytics skills, and more importantly, to apply different methods to collect and analyze data to inform business decisions. Examples, cases, and real data in the shipping industry will be used throughout the course, but the analytical approaches can be applied in a broader context. Upon completion of the course, students will be well prepared for the analytic role in the shipping-related industry or further academic studies in related disciplines. The following topics are covered:

  • Data-driven decision makings in shipping
  • Freight rate determinants in tramp shipping
  • Freight rate forecasting
  • Pricing and revenue management in liner shipping
  • Voyage estimation in chartering
  • Strategic chartering decisions
  • Ship investment and valuation
  • Investment appraisal methods
  • Ship choice decisions
  • Techno-economic assessment of green shipping solutions
  • Green price premium in eco ships
  • Big data applications in shipping
Description of the teaching methods
Active participation is used as the exam format of this course. Different from the traditional final exam at the end of the course, the assessment is integrated into the learning journey and distributed through a series of structured learning activities and assignments, supported by teacher’s continuous feedbacks. The goal is to foster a proactive and engaging learning environment that minimizes exam stress, enhances deep learning and prioritizes the application of knowledge.

The course is thus different in its structure and exam format than other courses. Students should expect workload (i.e. assignments) between most of the classes. Correspondingly, there will be NO final exam at the end of the course. Students will be evaluated based on 1) whether the student has been actively engaged in the learning activities and complete the assignments; and 2) whether the learning objectives have been satisfactorily fulfilled by the end of the course.
Feedback during the teaching period
Students will receive feedback continuously through the course on their hands-on exercises, case discussions and group presentations in the class. Teachers will also be available during office hours to give feedback or answer questions from students.
Student workload
Lectures 38 hours
Preparation 164 hours
Exam 72 hours
