The course offers the students knowledge about
theories and concepts underlying sustainable development,
sustainable supply chain management, and circular economy and
present current and past developments of the area. It will enable
them to reflect and discuss the linear economy and the transition
to a circular economy. They will learn how circularity and related
business practices create value and how to implement circularity
strategies, including tools and standards for circular economy.
Furthermore, students should be enabled to identify opportunities
and challenges on the way of implementing a sustainable and
circular economic strategy.

Course content, structure and pedagogical approach | ||||||||||||||||||||||
As we reach planetary boundaries, it is becoming increasingly clear that the current economic model is one of the causes of growing environmental challenges, such as the climate crisis, and societal problems, such as the divide between the global North and the global South. Sustainable business strategies, such as sustainable supply chain management have been introduced as an approach to try to mitigate or even avoid these challenges, for example by using processes that do not harm the environment or pose a health risk to employees.
However, even these efforts have often proven insufficient to address environmental and social challenges because they follow a linear production and consumption logic based on “doing less harm”. The adoption of a circular economy has the potential to offer a paradigm shift by changing our understanding of value creation, business models and production processes. In the latter, for example, circular economy treats one party’s waste as another party’s resource. In addition, the development of circular economy business models, such as product-service systems or collaborative consumption, aims to initiate a transition to more reflective consumer behavior and a changing understanding of value and value creation. This creates new challenges, but more importantly, new opportunities that will profoundly shape the business environment that successful companies will need to embrace.
The Sustainable Transformation and Circular Economy course provides students with an overview of current developments in sustainability, sustainable supply chain management and circular economy. Opportunities to shape the transformation based on past experience and new knowledge will be discussed. Among other things, students will gain indepth knowledge of relevant business models, different stakeholders in a circular economy, and tools that facilitate the implementation of sustainability and circularity. Students will be able to assess their own work environment and identify potential opportunities in adopting a sustainable and circular business approach. |

Description of the teaching methods | ||||||||||||||||||||||
A combination of on-campus and online teaching -
6 online sessions and one double session on campus.
The course follows a mixed-methods approach. Traditional classroom teaching will be only one part of the course, while the students are expected to take an active role. Cases and exercises are analyzed and discussed to illustrate the theoretical foundation of the course and link it to practical examples. |

The students will get feedback through these discussions and presentations of own case assignments but also through mini-quizzes and the opportunity of questions to the teacher in class and also through mails or office hours. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
