Course prerequisites | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The course is open to all undergraduate students in their final year. No prerequisite is required to take this course. However, genuine interest and good insights into the role of business in promoting the green transition are essential. The knowledge of the academic literature on international business and global value chains is preferable. A good understanding of the nexus between business strategy and government policies is advantageous. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Course content, structure and pedagogical approach | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
This course critically examines how different types of firms - including large multinational corporations and small firms - partake in the green transition through their businesses.
The green transition should be a shared goal of both local societies and the international community to realise sustainability. It is also a key aspect of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in which partnerships across sectors are crucial. Firms’ innovation efforts, backed by green growth policies, are pivotal to promoting the green transition. However, business activities, as well as consumer behaviours, often create negative impacts on the environment and society.
Given this, the course discusses various business aspects, including not only technological innovation but also business practices, across different industries and countries. By doing so, it analyses the challenges that firms face and considers possible ways in which various economic actors could contribute to the green transition.

The course comprises lectures on theoretical frameworks, case studies and class discussions. Each lecture topic is taught through a mixture of theories/concepts and case studies. Students’ active interactions and knowledge-sharing relevant to the course contents will form an integral part of the course. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
