Operations and supply chain management (O&SCM) form the
backbone of every enterprise and plays a key role in successfully
matching supply with demand. Recently, the topic has gained
widespread public attention due to disruptions of global supply of
several products. Examples of problems include maritime supply
chain hiccups, lack of inventory, highly volatile demand, among
others. All that worked as a testimony of the relevance of mature
processes, structures, and strategies related to O&SCM. Even
though many companies have made their operational “homework” and
have become experts in orchestrating their end-to-end supply
chains, several specialists have argued that “with the increasing
level of volatility, the days of static supply chain strategies are
over” (Simchi-Levi & Fine, 2010) and highlighted the need to
manage “supply chains in the era of turbulence” (Christopher &
Holweg, 2011).
