Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The topic of Internship II is real-life problems of a strategic or organizational nature, which maritime companies and organizations are currently facing. The course focuses on finding solutions to such problems. It allows students to leverage their practical experiences from their shipping internships as well as their theoretical training from previous courses of the bachelor program to address current real-life problems for maritime companies and organizations.

Based on their own experiences in the respective internships students shall identify and describe an organizational or strategic challenge, which maritime companies and organizations are currently encountering. Students shall describe the nature of the challenge and discuss possible solutions for it. In pointing out solutions, students shall refer to selected theories or models from previous courses of the bachelor program such as (but not restricted to) strategic management, finance, marketing, organizational analysis, operations and logistics management, microeconomics and maritime law. Students shall explain how theories or models can inform and guide solutions for the challenges that maritime companies and organizations are experiencing.

The course will train students in communicating and discussing real-life business challenges.

Research-based teaching
CBS’ programmes and teaching are research-based. The following types of research-based knowledge and research-like activities are included in this course:
Research-based knowledge
  • Classic and basic theory
Research-like activities
  • Analysis
  • Peer review including Peer-to-peer
Description of the teaching methods
Teaching for the course is structured around students’ individual internship experiences, and most of the teaching is organized as one-to-one supervision sessions with the teacher. Each student will have a supervision session of 20 minutes.
Prior to the supervision session, each student shall send the teacher a short presentation with slides that summarize the main contents for the home assignment.
The first slide shall identify a practical real-life challenge for a shipping company or maritime organization and outline its possible causes and importance. The second slide shall highlight relevant theory with which to analyze the challenge, and the third slide shall outline a feasible solution to the challenge.
The teacher will use the slides to prepare structured feedback, which the student can use to finalize the home assignment. The feedback will also help students in reflecting theoretically about their internship experiences.
Feedback during the teaching period
Students will get feedback from their peers in class as well as the teacher (as outlined under teaching methods).
Student workload
Internship 450 hours
Exam 37 hours
