Learning Objectives
  • Understanding basic principles related to the concept of search and the way this applies to the generation of innovations.
  • Understanding the process as well as the potential opportunities and constraints of basic search approaches.
  • Appreciating the correspondence between local search and innovation outcome and capturing possibilities for overcoming local search biases.
  • Learning about distributed sources of innovation, and capturing their characteristics, value and fields of application
  • Understanding the differences in processes and outcome between closed and open innovation models
  • Understanding key approaches for search among distributed sources of innovation (directed vs. undirected search methods) and their advantages, disadvantages and fields of application
  • Capturing the concept of contextual distance in search
  • Learning about real-life applications related to innovation search methods, processes and applications
  • Learning about factors that influences innovation search across various sources of innovation
Examination
an individual written report
Exam Period May/June
Examination
The course concludes with an individual written report (15 A4 pages including a cover sheet and a list of references, tables and figures - open book exam, assignment made at home). As a prerequisite for the exam intermediary assignments have to be presented and discussed in class. The course literature (and other literature identified as relevant for the respective research question) as well as the findings from the mini project, and the discussions and feedback in class can be used as input for the individual written exam.

  • Search as a mechanism of exploring new vs. exploiting existing knowledge in the development of innovations.
  • Closed. vs. open innovation models
  • Sources of innovation
  • Methods of search across distributed sources of innovation
  • Antecedents and consequences of search across distributed innovation sources
  • Innovation Search in a developing country context
Teaching Methods
Lecture-style classes, case studies, group work and discussions, student presentations based on mini-project work.
Further Information

This course is offered as part of the Agribusiness and Innovation Master Program in collaboration with Copenhagen University, Faculty of Life Sciences. Thus, the number of cand. merc. elective students is limited to 10.
