Course content and structure
Mastering knowledge and company wide collaboration in the virtual and global organization.

How do we master Company-wide Collaboration and the flow of knowledge in global organizations with social media?

Knowledge Management has a bad track record. In many years we have perceived knowledge as a product that could be contained for later use. The codification of knowledge is based on a premise that “If we can save it, we can find it, and use it again”. That is far from true, and many knowledge management systems has failed due to this believe. At this course we discuss a new strategy for “knowledge flow”.
After a theoretical discussion based on the former paradigm presented in Morten T. Hansens article from 1999 in Harvard Business Review “What’s your strategy for managing knowledge?” we take a new look on the subject through the lenses of the theories from “Managing flow - The process theory of the knowledge based firm” [Nonaka, 2010] and the insights from the Mass Collaboration theories from the book “Collaboration” [Hansen, 2009].

Combining the view of knowledge as a process with the a new framework for companywide collaboration, and the social organization [Bradley, 2011] the course will focus on answering the question on how we enable the flow of sympatic, operational and konceptuel knowledge, with social media, and “easy to use” devices, so that global organizations can “collaborate” no matter where the individual is placed.

Lectures will be based on themes like:
  • From managing knowledge to mastering flow
  • From container to process view of knowledge
  • From structure and hierarchy to filling out structural holes with communities empowered by social media
  • From silo thinking to mass collaboration
  • From digital revolution to new normal
  • From a culture of control to a culture of activation
  • From e-mail to collaboration tools.
During the course we will - in the light of problembased learning and workshop form - formulate  new and better ways of supporting the flow of knowledge accross distance and culture with sociale media, improving mass colllaboration competencies in the organizations.

Teaching methods
Workshops and problem based learning
We begin with:
What is the problem?
Is it a problem? Why is it a problem?
How can we design solutions to the problem?

In most lectures we will meet Danish companies with global issues, (virtual or physical present) presenting us with real problems within the theme, giving them an opportunity to formulate a problem, that we will try to understand and articulate in light of theory, and - if possible – come up with solutions and advice.
Student workload
Preparation 120 hours
Workshops 30 hours
Project 100 hours
