Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors: At the end of the course, the students must be able to:
  • Understand the general dynamics of the maritime industry and apply the analytical tools from the syllabus to examine the challenges of the industry
  • Explain the most important theories in Maritime Economics and illustrate the analytical insights from the literature with empirical examples from cases
  • Apply the principles of maritime trade, charteing practices and its contracts
  • Conduct a critical evaluation of different theories from the curriculum and explain the relevance of compared to a case

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

Re-examination when the regular examination is failed is a 20 minutes individual oral exam based upon the same group project with a 2 pages supplement.

Make-up examination when ill at the oral exam is a 20 minutes individual oral exam based upon the same group project.

Make-up examination when ill during the writing of the project is a 20 minutes individual oral exam with 20 minutes preparation in the entire curriculum.
Course content and structure

The course aims to develop the students’ knowledge of maritime economics by bridging the theoretical learning from the course on introduction to maritime economics with practical cases. Based on the students’ experiences from the internships the course will include student presentations and classroom discussions in relation to the five main themes: (1) shipping costs, (2) revenue markets, (3) shipping organization, (4) fleet management & operation, and (5) corporate strategy. This will be combined with lecturers and discussions of the literature.

 

Because of the internships the classroom teaching will be concentrated in week 46 (from Monday the 14 November to Friday the 18 November). In order to pass the course the students are expected to prepare a number of tasks in advance:

 

By 1 November the students are expected to:

  • Answer a questionnaire about the internship (the questionnaire will be distributed to you on 1 September)

  • Hand in a brief report (max. 10 pages) about the internship answering the following questions:

    • Give a short introduction to your company

    • Describe the organization of your company

    • Describe your specific tasks in the company

By 14 November the students are expected to:

  • Have prepared a 15 minutes presentation (on a specific question which will be distributed to you on the 7 November)

  • Have read all the course literature

 

On 1 September the students will receive a letter (on learn) with further instructions on the assignment, questionnaire, presentations, literature etc.
