Course content and structure

The aim of this course is twofold:

1. to develop your awareness and understanding of culture’s impact on communication and

2. to increase your understanding of English as a global language in professional business contexts.

This course exposes students to key intercultural communication theories and research, including how cultural background influences cognition, behavior, verbal and non-verbal communication. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of global English or English as a lingua franca (ELF) in business contexts, including how speakers of English from various English language circles communicate with each other and how noise, accents, jargons, and dialects can also influence communication. Self-awareness is also promoted through the course through case-based learning and reflections, including the role that English plays in Danish society and how the experience of learning English as a second language varies across cultural contexts.

Teaching methods
This course integrates educational tools from a variety of contexts, including

1. major theoretical research from global English & Intercultural Communication studies

2. practice-based articles, news stories, and audio/visual clips regarding the use of English in global business contexts

3. case-based learning to give students a chance to apply new knowledge to business cases

Students are expected to actively contribute to course lectures, especially as our own classroom will serve as a global English laboratory. The class combines lectures, class sessions facilitated by student groups, discussions, and case assignments.
