Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

Content, structure:
Leadership demands the ability to set goals, compose visions, prioritise strategy, and uncover company value. All of which must take place within an environment which is open to change, organisational process, and subject to the vagaries of emergent events.
The leader may be embedded in the firm behind the scenes in an important nurturing capacity, or equally appear prominent in response to crisis management. This course comprehensively explains the role of leadership in this complex business environment and unravels its most important functions.

Special attention is paid to language, the ability to persuade, cajole as well as befriend and support company employees, including supporters in the wider public arena. In general the leader-follower relationship is fully explored and its mode of behaviour, language and interaction.

Comparisons are made between management approaches and leadership and the way they may differ or overlap in various organizational settings.

Prominent social thinkers and their impact on the leadership concepts of transformational, charismatic, authentic, transactional, and ethical leadership are fully explored. Creating narratives, empathy, improvisation and persuasive argumentation are focused through these leadership models.

The course takes full advantage of its theory-practice structure in order to fully understand the domestic-global implicaions of leadership. Sessions are devoted to students presentations (not graded) in the form of discussing political and business leaders from the student's own individual country. We then discuss the presentation and give feedback relating individual leaders or managers to the relevant models. Cultures of different countries  encourage and tolerate different standards and this becomes apparent in the ease or difficulty of international leader relationships and the iconic images resented to the public. In other words, both the psychology of the leader and the public persona will be open to scrutiny.
